How to make fish tacos
Making fish tacos is very easy: Season the fish thoroughly and bake in the oven until cooked through and flaky. Prepare the salsa for the tacos, then assemble the fish tacos with flaked baked fish, salsa, spicy sauce, and a drizzle of lime juice. Easy!
Ingredients for Best Fish Taco Sauce
The fish taco sauce is what makes the fish taco flavors blend together. All you need is mayo, lime juice, garlic powder, and sriracha (or any hot sauce). The sriracha gives it a little kick of spice so you can add more or less based on your preference.

Directions
1. To make the fish tacos: Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper or silicone liner. In a small dish, combine seasonings: 2 teaspoons chili powder, 1 teaspoon paprika, 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and 1/2 teaspoon black pepper. Sprinkle the seasoning mix over both sides of the halibut.
2. Lightly drizzle the fish fillet with olive oil and dot with butter. Bake in the oven at 375ºF (190ºC) for 20-25 min. Broil for 3-5 minutes at the end to brown the edges if you like. Once done, let the fish rest for 5 minutes before flaking with a fork.
3. To make the salsa, combine red onion, tomato, and a few drops of lime juice. Make the spicy sauce by mixing mayo, sriracha, garlic powder, and remaining lime juice, to taste.
4. Toast quickly the corn tortillas on a large dry skillet or griddle over medium/high heat, or stack between plates and heat for one minute in the microwave.
5. To assemble the fish tacos: Start with pieces of baked fish then add the salsa and finish with a drizzle of spicy sauce. Serve the fish tacos with a fresh lime wedge to squeeze over tacos. Enjoy! ❤️

Tips for the fish taco recipe
- If baking fish in the oven is not an option, you can always pan-sear the fish fillets or deep-fry like fish-and-chips. It’s delicious too!
- If you’re out of limes, simply use lemons instead.
- If you buy frozen fish filets, them thaw overnight in your refrigerator so they keep a nice texture for baking.
Fish Taco Toppings
Any topping you like for regular tacos will work great with fish tacos:
- Avocado: For a creamier texture.
- Cilantro
- Chopped scallion
- Jalapeño: If you like a kick of heat and freshness in flavor.
- Cotija cheese: A Mexican cheese similar to feta but milder and less salty. It’s cheap and you can find it refrigerated cheese section of almost any grocery store.
What fish is best for fish tacos
Any flaky white fish will do for making fish tacos: cod, halibut, tilapia, red snapper… We found that fish with firm, flaky flesh tastes better overall. Picking up skinless filets will make your life easier.
Corn or four tortillas for fish tacos?
While your choice of tortilla is your own, we found corn tortillas work best for fish tacos, particularly if you lightly char them in a dry skillet or grill.
How to keep the fish taco leftovers
You can keep the baked fish in an airtight container for up to 3 days. Reheat the fish in the microwave and assemble the fish taco with the other ingredients.
